In-Home Safety Evaluations

One in four elderly Americans over the age of 65 fall each year, and according to U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an older person is treated in the emergency room for a fall every 11 seconds. Every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall. Falls are the leading cause of all injuries in elderly adults, fatal and nonfatal.

Falls not only have a physical impact on a person, but also an impact on mental health and well-being. Many older adults fear falling. In fact, it is said that up to 50% of elderly adults who have recently fell fear another fall, resulting in a loss of confidence. This loss of confidence generally results in self-imposed limitations of activities, causing a greater chance of more falls due to physical decline, as well as depression and social isolation.

There are, however, a wealth of easy ways to prevent injuries due to falls within the home. Serenity In home safety evaluations are dedicated to helping elderly adults and adults with disabilities strategize ways to improve mobility as well as home and environmental safety. Our staff will evaluate the home to improve safety by eliminating fall risks and identifying any other potential safety hazards, such as fire and health hazards. Each room’s setup will also be evaluated for optimal suitability to the patient. Risks such as slick floor finishes, poor lighting, and slippery rugs will be brought to the attention of the patient. The patient’s accessibility and mobility within the home will also be evaluated. Our goal is to provide the patient with the best chance at living independently with as little risk of falls as possible.
